Look, if you have a long connection anywhere in the world, pray it’s in Singapore. Changi Airport keeps winning “best airport” every year for a reason, you can literally spend the whole layover inside and not get bored (there’s a waterfall, butterfly garden, movie theatre, pool on the roof), but that would be a crime because the city is only 20-30 minutes away and stupidly easy to reach.
I just had 48 hours there last month between flights and managed to do everything without rushing like a maniac. Here’s the exact plan that worked for me.
Day 1 – Straight from the plane
Landed at 7:40 am, cleared immigration in 12 minutes (Singapore efficiency is scary), left the bags at the free left-luggage counter in Terminal 3 (costs nothing for first 24h if you fly certain airline, otherwise like 10 SGD). Jumped on the MRT straight to Bayfront station. Whole trip door-to-door 35 minutes.
First stop – Gardens by the Bay. Get there before 9 am and you basically have the place to yourself. The Cloud Forest dome with the 35-meter waterfall is unreal, feels like Avatar. Flower Dome is nice too but skip it if you’re tight on time. Supertrees look normal during daylight, wait for the light show at 7:45 pm and 8:45 pm, totally worth coming back for.
Walked over to Marina Bay Sands, went up to the observation deck (25 SGD, no need to book the infinity pool unless you’re staying at the hotel). The view is insane, whole city looks like a sci-fi movie. Grabbed a quick coffee at the cafe up there because the AC was life-saving.
Lunch – Satay Street at Lau Pa Sat hawker centre. 10 sticks of chicken satay + peanut sauce for 10 bucks, plus fresh sugar cane juice. Heaven.
Afternoon I just wandered around the bay, took the dumb tourist photos with the Merlion, walked through the Helix Bridge. Nothing too crazy, legs were still dead from the long-haul.
Evening plan: back to Gardens by the Bay for the Garden Rhapsody light show. Sat on the grass with a Tiger beer from 7-Eleven (2.80 SGD, cold and perfect) and watched the Supertrees dance to music. Felt like a proper holiday.
Dinner at Maxwell Food Centre – Tian Tian chicken rice. Queue looks long but moves fast, totally worth it. Took Grab back to the airport area around 10:30 pm, crashed at the airport hotel in Terminal 3 (booked a 6-hour block, super cheap and the bed was actually comfortable).
Day 2 – Little India & Chinatown before flying out
Woke up at 8, checked out, stored bags again. MRT to Little India. Walked around the colourful streets, had roti prata with curry for breakfast (crispy, flaky, spicy – perfect hangover food even without hangover).
Then to Chinatown for the temple and more food, obviously. Tried popiah (fresh spring rolls) and kaya toast with soft-boiled eggs. Coffee in Singapore is weirdly good, thick and sweet.
Had to be back at the airport by 4 pm for a 7 pm flight, so around 2 pm I headed back. Quick shower at the transit hotel (they have pay-per-use showers with shampoo and towels), ate laksa at the staff canteen in Terminal 3 basement (cheaper than upstairs and twice as good), and just chilled in the butterfly garden until boarding.
Random tips that saved me:
Get a simple prepaid SIM at the airport (10-15 SGD for tons of data, needed for maps and Grab)
MRT is air-conditioned and spotless, no need to take taxis unless you’re lazy or have tons of luggage
Most places take card, but bring a bit of cash for hawker centres
Free city tour if your layover is 5.5+ hours, but honestly the MRT is faster and you control the schedule
Seriously, 48 hours felt like a proper mini-vacation. If you ever get stuck in Singapore for a day or two, leave the airport. You’ll thank me later.
