Okay, so you’re stuck in Doha for a day or maybe two because of that long Qatar Airways connection. Don’t just sit in the airport eating overpriced sandwiches, the city is actually pretty cool and super easy to do on a layover.
First thing first, transit visa is FREE now for like 95% of nationalities if your layover is 5 to 96 hours. You just show your onward ticket at immigration and boom, they stamp you in. Takes 5 minutes, no forms, no drama. I did it twice this year, zero issues.
Here’s what I actually managed in 36 hours last time (works perfect for 24 or 48 too, just cut or add sleep).
Landed 10 pm – straight to the city
Flight got in late, cleared everything by 11:15 pm. Free airport shuttle to the city every 30 min if you’re cheap (takes you to Souq Waqif), or just grab a turquoise Karwa taxi, costs like 40-50 QAR to the centre.
Checked into a small hotel right inside Souq Waqif (there’s a bunch for 250-350 QAR a night, clean, good AC, perfect location). Dropped the bag and went walking. The souq at night is magical, all the lanterns lit up, smells of spices and shisha everywhere. Had late-night karak tea and chapati with cheese from a street cart, best 3 riyals I ever spent.
Next day – full speed
Woke up at 8, grabbed breakfast at the hotel (dates, labneh, bread, coffee, done). Walked 15 min to the Corniche. Morning light on the skyline is insane, all the funky buildings look even weirder when the sun hits them.
Rented a bike from the blue stations along the promenade (super cheap, card only) and cycled to the Museum of Islamic Art. Museum opens at 9 am, entry free. The building itself is the star, sits on its own little island, inside it’s quiet and cool, some carpets and old Qurans that blow your mind. Spent maybe 90 minutes, perfect amount.
From there walked back along the Corniche, took the classic dhow boat photos, watched old guys fishing. Stopped at a random café for fresh mango juice.
Lunch back in Souq Waqif, found this tiny place called Al Jasra, had lamb mandi that was falling off the bone and saffron rice. Portion huge, cost like 45 QAR, ate half and took the rest for airport later.
Afternoon was hot (38°C), so hid in the air-conditioned part of the souq, bought some baklava and those little perfume bottles as gifts. Also watched falcon shopping, yes, there’s an actual falcon souq section, birds cost more than my laptop.
Around 5 pm took a taxi to Katara Cultural Village just to see it quick. Pretty but skippable if you’re tight on time. Way better is to head to The Pearl, that fake Venice island thing. Walked around the marinas, felt weirdly like Miami, grabbed ice cream, watched rich kids in Lamborghinis.
Evening & back to airport
Sunset from the Corniche again (different light, worth seeing twice). Had early dinner at a Lebanese place in the souq, mixed grill and way too much hummus. Took a taxi back to the airport around 10 pm for a 2 am flight (60 QAR, 20 minutes).
Still had time so went to the big mosque in the airport (yes, there’s one), prayed/chilled, then ate my leftover mandi in the quiet area near gate E.
Quick tips that actually matter:
Download Careem app, works better than Uber here sometimes
Dress normal but cover shoulders and knees if you’re going to the souq or museum, nobody hassles you but it’s respect
Fridays everything opens late (museums from 1:30 pm), plan around that
Airport has free showers in the transit area if you don’t wanna pay for hotel
Bring an empty bottle, water fountains everywhere and the tap water is fine
Honestly, Doha surprised me hard. Went in thinking “desert airport city” and left wanting to come back properly. If you have 24 hours or more, get out there. You won’t regret it.
